Vanity and Taimak in 1985’s ‘The Last Dragon’

Vanity and Taimak in 1985’s ‘The Last Dragon’

Fashion on Film: The Last Dragon

August 26, 2019

I have been fascinated with style and costumes for as long as I can remember. Whenever I would watch films or TV shows, not only was I focused on the writing and story line but also what each character was wearing and how it connected to the character personality. I loved it so much, I decided to go into the industry of costume design and styling as a career. Now, all I do is study films and TV shows that I once loved just to pay attention to all of the small details I probably missed when I was younger. One of my favorite films I loved watching in my teens was “The Last Dragon”, directed by Michael Schultz. Not only did it star my favorite Prince protege, Denise “Vanity” Matthews ( who portrayed the character Laura Charles) but it was also filmed during one of my favorite decades, the 80’s.

I love how the costume designer, Robert De Mora, glamorized this high energized martial arts film. Plus, the color palette showed in this film was very bold and striking, showcasing deep blues, reds and even a cool yellow jumpsuit worn by lead actor Tamik playing Leory Green. Be sure to see for yourself by checking out the images below.
