Fashion on Film: Native Son (2019)

June 27, 2020

Recently during quarantine I’ve been on a quest to watch films and documentaries that I have been putting on the back burner since I was so busy tending to my daily workload. Now, that we have time to basically do everything (or nothing at all) we wanted to do, I have been taking the time to finally go down the list I curated and I have been amazed by all the films I’ve been watching so far.

One of my favorite films I have been watching is “Native Son” which was directed by Rashid Johnson and starred Ashton Sanders. This film was adapted from the 1930’s novel “Native Son” written by Richard Wright. Of course my favorite thing about this film was the costumes. Costume designer Elizabeth Birkett aka Beth Gibbs gave the lead character Bigger Thomas a punk rock makeover from his usual 1930’s style that was given in the original story. I think what I love the most about this style in this film is that the style match the film aesthetic and storytelling of the film. Plus, seeing a black man from Chicago being interested in punk style & music was very refreshing to see on film. I definitely recommend watching this film as it is filled with great style, story telling and amazing acting.

Check out photos a few photos of the costume below & by visiting the Hollywood Movie Costumes & Props website here.
